Award Winning Museum of Te Wairoa

The Museum of Te Wairoa was established in 1999 and houses a large collection of objects excavated over the past 80 years. The displays are dynamic and interactive including the audiovisual presentation. The history of the settlement, the fusion of two cultures and tourism is portrayed through hundreds of images and easy to read text. Also included in the museum are displays of archaeology and volcanology and a children’s discovery room. The museum takes approximately 30 minutes to tour.

The Buried Village received the Tourism Innovator Award at the New Zealand Tourism Awards in 2001/2002. This award was received as a culture and heritage attraction in recognition of the world-class methods and ideas used to interpret heritage within the Museum of Te Wairoa, and throughout the excavated archaeological site.
