Action for Children

The Buried Village is an attraction suitable for the whole family, with its easy access to all areas of the site, places to relax, eat, shop and play.

When out on a day trip, keeping the kids happy is top of any families ‘must do list’. At the Buried Village, there are numerous activities for the kids to see and do.

Our younger visitors can enjoy taking part in Smithy's Treasure Hunt.

Next to the cafe, there is an adventure playground where the little ones can have fun, play and explore while you enjoy a great coffee.

Don’t forget to check out the Children’s Discovery Room in the museum. This is an interactive discovery experience especially designed for children, but enjoyed by adults too. Here you can listen to stories and read “children living in Te Wairoa” from around the 1860’s.

Keen to take some of this history and culture home?

Our Store has a great range of children’s books on New Zealand history, heritage and culture, along with Maori myths and legends and stories by famous New Zealand children’s authors.

Easy access within the site, means being able to move freely. So pram and stroller access is catered for with sealed paths and ramps throughout the village (with the exception of the track to the waterfalls). Highchair and changing facilities are also available.
