Lake Okareka is a small lake accessible via a loop road off Tarawera Road.
Situated beside Tarawera Road, on the way to the Buried Village, the Blue Lake’s clear blue waters are safe for swimming at the broad pumice sand beach.

Further along the road you’ll find the Green Lake, or Rotokakhi, which is privately owned. Lake Tarawera is a deep, large clear lake renowned for the rapid growth of the rainbow trout it produces.

With its sparkling clear waters fringed with pristine native forest, Lake Tarawera offers an ideal setting for cruising, fishing, swimming and other water sports. At the far end of the lake, accessible only by boat, are natural hot springs under the sand. Hence it’s name of Hot Water Beach.
