See and Do

Waterfall and trails

Scenic pathways link the Buried Village with the surrounding re-vegetated area, enjoy pristine native bush and view the native flora and fauna above the Wairere Falls looking out over remote volcanic scenery. From this vantage point you can catch a glimpse of the wild rainbow trout that inhabit Te Wairoa stream and like all visitors to Wairere falls, be immersed in its natural beauty and exquisite wonder.

Explore the exciting Wairere Falls

Then, if you dare, take the steps down to Wairere Falls and be thrilled as you stand in the spray as the water plunges 30 metres over the Waitoharuru Cliffs. Although the steps are challenging, our oldest visitor was 80 years old!

However, if you are not feeling up to it, you will not miss out! Take the flat track to the Waitoharuru Valley Lookout, giving you a beautiful view of Lake Tarawera.

Make sure to bring some walking shoes.

Allow 20 minutes for the trail.
