6 June 2017

Commemorate the 131st Anniversary of the eruption of Mt Tarawera at the Buried Village

Winter is here at the Buried Village of Te Wairoa.  The crisp air and falling leaves make this the perfect time of year to appreciate the eerie quiet of this formerly bustling village.
Stop by and rediscover the stories uncovered at New Zealand's most-visited archaeological site.

131st Anniversary Commemoration

Saturday the 10th of June, 2017 marks the 131st Anniversary of the 1886 Mt. Tarawera eruption.  This devastating natural disaster took lives, destroyed the village, and the demolished famous Pink and White Terraces, which were widely considered the "8th Wonder of the World" and were a driving force behind the birth of the New Zealand tourism industry.
To mark this special occasion at the Buried Village, we will be hosting a Gold-coin Entry Open Day on Saturday the 10th of June with a special service at 10am to commemorate the event.  Join us to learn more about this historical event and be a part of our rich heritage.
