Rotorua Wearable Creations Awards 2011

23 August 2011

What a busy time we have had at the Buried Village over the last few weeks preparing for Wearable Arts 2011. The whole team has been on the go from the time we decided to enter Wearable Arts (Early July) through the final award night held Last Saturday 20th August. Rushing around town trying to find suitable materials to pull off the creation.

Our creation was a Victorian styled teapot and tea cosy which represented Vi’s Teahouse at the Buried Village. The inspiration for our wearable creation came from Vi’s Teahouse, which has has recently been transformed into a Victorian style Teahouse to celebrate the Buried Village’s 80th Jubilee and in memory of Violet Smith. Vi Smith re-established the tearooms in 1931 for visitors coming to see the Buried Village of Te Wairoa.

We were lucky enough to get Thomas McGrath to model our creation who is the great grandson of Vi Smith.

The awards night was absolutley spectacular and although we may not have taken home any awards the team had a fabulous night and the compliments we recieved were overwhelming.

(Our Creation- made from sheets, metallic paper, tulle, polystyrene, spraypaint, satin fabric)

Music created by Thomas McGrath
